Transition to Middle School
Welcome to Forest Lake Area Middle School, we are excited to welcome your student!
We know that the transition to middle school can be a big step, and we have a process in place to guide students and families along every step along the way.
Get Ready for Middle School
Save the Date! 5th Grade Parent & Student Information Nights: January 12th & 13th
January 12th @ 6:00 PM - The Forest Lake Area Middle School will host a virtual information session for incoming 6th grade students and families. During the presentation you will learn more about the middle school, our educational program, and meet some important staff supporting the transition. Highlights will include:
- What a day of a 6th grader will be like at Forest Lake Area Middle School.
- FLAMS 3-year course sequence.
- Descriptions of activities, clubs, and enrichment opportunities.
- How we create a safe and supportive environment for students to flourish through We Are Rangers.
January 13th from 4:00-8:00 PM - Throughout Tuesday evening, students and families will have the opportunity to explore in-person the Forest Lake Area Middle School. You will have a chance to tour middle school classrooms, labs, the media center, and other spaces throughout the building, but will also be able to connect with staff supporrting the transition. Informational sessions will also be available. This evening 5th grade students will also test various band and orchestra instruments as they make their decision on which music experience they will select as a 6th grade student (choir, band, or orchestra).
Class Registration Process
Middle School counselors will visit your child’s classroom during the week of January 19th. Students will take registration materials home to review with their parents before making their selections.
Starting school at Forest Lake Area Middle School
Our school offers a WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) program that helps students become familiar with the middle school and provides each student with a small group of peers to help get their middle school years off to a strong start.
In addition, our middle school offers staggered start days that allow new students their own first day of school dedicated to helping them feel at home in the building, walking through their schedule, practicing their locker combination and getting used to being a middle school student.
We also offer an advisory program that gives students the opportunity to learn the skills for success in middle school and beyond. In September, this program is specifically designed for orientation and helping new students get off to a great start.
The Middle School Experience
Our middle school uses a team concept to create a small school experience for students while still offering larger school opportunities. That means our students spend the majority of their day within the same "house" or wing of the school and have all of their core classes with a smaller group of students.
Our 6th grade students are housed together in the green wing of the school, while our 7-8 grade students will be split into three different teams of students within the tangerine, blue and maroon wings of the school.
